A few weeks ago I was looking for an integral persepective on Burning Man (never been there, but I am oh-so-curious as it starting to popup more and more in my meme space and such...) and found this. Robin suggested I post it here.
The writer, Jordan Gruber, is host of enlightenment.com and interviewed KW on the Speaking of Everything cds...
www.burningman.com/blackroc...uber.html
I found this bit interesting:
I wrote an email to Ken Wilber and asked him if he ever would go to Burning Man. His reply was "Ugh." Seriously gritty, rough and ready nature mysticism just isn't for everyone.
Yeah, that is is Ken!

Re: Integral Burning Man
Tue, May 4, 2004 - 5:03 PMNice link! Actually Larry Harvey (the founder of BM) is on Integral Naked, talking to ken wilber...
www.integralnaked.org/talk.aspx
Saying things like "Nature doesn’t operate on a plan. Nature never made a plan. Nature happens. And our problem is that we don’t respect that fact, that stunning fact. At Burning Man, we just try to design a structure that will allow nature to happen."
You have to subscribe to download it... I am a long time subscriber and I feel extremely guilty to even think about making this available to someone who would ask by email... Hm hm...
You bought your ticket to BM yet? Long live radical self-expression, radical self-reliance, gift economy... -

Re: Integral Burning Man
Tue, May 4, 2004 - 6:21 PMNice integral community you are building here Jun!
I subscribe to IN too and it's worth every penny :) I haven't posted much there yet tho. You? I've had some thoughts on file sharing too - I know a lot of Matrix fans would love to hear the upcoming Wachowski brother talk (including me), and perhaps find integral studies quite interesting as well - I'm sure once i post the link to IN I will get requests. I'll likely just point them to the free month sign-up, if it's there. Integral File Sharing - a whole new topic there!
Funny..after reading a post of yours in another thread I was going to suggest IN to you too, as a place to find folks in Paris. Is that where you are now? If so, you might also want to try the KW Meetup Group - kenwilber.meetup.com or Integral Next - integralnext.org (seems to be down right now...it is fairly new).
I did catch the talk with Harvey as well! I love it how Wilber can talk to pretty well anyone about anything...but hey, he is the Father of Integral Studies, if there is one.
I will not be going this year and in the past I thought I never would - wasn't my thing, I said to myself - but I came to realize that that is half the reason for going ;-) And of course I have yet to read a negative account yet, and friends like Rob here are always sharing there experiences - I think it was Rob who first told me of it a few years back. Anyway, I would love to go at some point in the next couple of years. Perhaps by then there will be a few overtly integral events going on there as well!
By the way, did you check out Alex Grey's BM mp3's ? I confess I haven't listened myself yet, but they do look interesting! Check out this thread right here on tribe - palenque.tribe.net/ -

Re: Integral Burning Man
Wed, May 5, 2004 - 4:49 AMThanks Ryan, I hope the Vancouver connection will continue to contribute!
I haven't posted on IN, though I spent some time reading and there was some interesting posts. For sure there are some interesting characters.
Integral File Sharing, ha ha, something to add to Integral Institute's multiplex (www.integralinstitute.org/iu.htm)
I have to look more thoroughly after Parisian Integral folks. I saw the meetup thing a while ago but it didn't seem to move much, I should give it another try. iNext is a good idea and starting a Integral Salon seems to be the way to go. Is it moving in Vancouver in that respect?
Yes it is quite something to be able to talk on a deep level to anybody. What amazes me is his capacity to repeat the same ideas over and over to different people, keeping the same genuine spark of amazement each times he tells them. Remember those one or two important teachers in your life, that had a passion for what they taught? Well, more power to them! Have you read One Taste? It gives a good AQAL insight into this guys tetra-life. I always think it's good to know more about your teachers :-)
Well it was my first Burning Man last year, and I had the most fascinating time of my life. I was lucky enough to go there with BM veterans which allowed me to relax into the experience, and oh my. It feels good to be human. The impact on my Upper Left Quadrant was durable, not permanent. For more than three month after BM I was able to function from a place I didn't know of, since then I've lost touch with it, but I know it's there and I know eventually I'll remember.
I had friends too who kept telling me about it and things fell into place last year. I participated in setting up a big camp and that was also one of the most rewarding experiences to see people come and enjoy themselves in the setup we had built together.
And guess what, I was at Alex Grey's talk... :-) Thank you so much for reminding me of that special time, I'll download the mp3s and get a little playa high.
And Ryan, any help in meaningfully growing this little community will be greatly appreciated. This is my first time, and I'd welcome any contribution!
Peace,
Jun. -

Re: Integral Burning Man
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 9:51 PMI hope the Vancouver connection contributes too (yo Rob!) but I'm part of the Calgary connection ;-) As I understand it, things are moving quite nicely there.
I am quite looking forward to the IU/Multiplex opening! I would love to seem them follow MIT with an Open Course Ware model (ocw.mit.edu/index.html), but I'm sure there will be something there for everyone at some reasonable price.
I loved One Taste! Some parts in particular I really appreciated, like the chapter where he describes the world from the point of view from a quantum particle to one at the causal/nondual level. Wow.
It is quite amazing how KW has gone from a virtual recluse to head of the II to the weekly posts in IN and live talks in Boulder in these past few years. One Taste kinda of helped prepare all of us Wilber fans for the man behind the myth sort of thing - good prep for IN! Wilber has, in a way, done what he said in an interview - "Bodhisattvas are going to have to become politicians." I always wondered what would happen if kind of 'came back to the cave' for everyone else, and now I am finding out!
Thanks for sharing your experience from Burning Man. I'm sure it's only a matter of time for me, and even my girlfriend is warming to the idea :) It was at the SDi training with Don Beck a month or two ago that really hit me how I haven't integrated Purple very much in me. I had thought about it before, but it was only then, going through each of the vMemes and such, that I fully realized I had some pathology there. I went throught each of the vMeme codes and looked at how much of it was in my life, how much I valued it, and how much it was changing, and so on - really good exercise. Anyway, my previous aversion to BM was possibly related to the lack of health Purple methinks ...
neti neti,
Ryan

I was at the Alex Grey talk too!
check out my gallery to see a picture of myself and a few of my friends who were there with me.
Ryan, I highly recommend getting in touch with your purple! I figure one trip to burning man might help. I really can't do justice to my experiences there without it. (or even rationalize them)

Ken's disinterest aside, I find that the playa heightens my IOS practices. I am in touch with my body, with nature, with my spirit and the energies around me.

Re: Integral Burning Man
Sat, February 26, 2005 - 2:39 PMSo our integral salon folk in LA are planning to make the playa trip for the first time (my fifth) and we're looking to connect with other i-types out there. Tell us if you're planning to come out in 2005!
